Grit Story: David D. from Haworth, NJ

IMG_5750I had symptoms of colon cancer several years ago. Although a family history of colon cancer was well documented on my chart, it wasn’t until I fought for several months to see a specialist, that the Stage IIIB was determined. I had a colon resection, and six months of chemotherapy. I went from being newly married, new father,  a ‘superman’,  to being vulnerable, even unable to lift my son. However, as my strength returned, I resumed a more normal schedule, even returned to playing soccer.  John Wayne seemed to lead by example, as does the John Wayne Cancer Foundation. If you can set an example, people can relate and find something to ‘hang their hat on’ and make a difference. I wake up every morning and everything hurts, but I put my pants on one leg at a time and take on the day with everything I have. Like John Wayne, I am alive and kick’n!
